So here is the deal for a deck and fence. In Champaign IL you can build a fence right on the property line. You do not need a permit to build a fence. Go ahead a buid away. Just make sure you know where the property line is.
There is a 10 foot space that need to be avoided for building in the back of your property or 6 feet on the side of your property. If you are building a low deck (about a foot off the ground) you can encroach on that space by 2.5 feet. So on the side you could build 3.5 feet from the side property line if it's a low deck.
However! If you build a fence on the property line you can build a low deck right up to the fence! This means I will have to build a fence first, then the deck will go right up to it. PERFECT!
